Workflow: sheet metal → flat pattern → laser DXF → nesting

Sheet rules (K = 0.44), Flatten, flat DXF for the laser (AM_0/AM_3/AM_5) and Sheets: how many sheets to buy and the cutting package.

Updated Current version KoCAD 0.31.0PC (Windows etc.)

Step by step

  1. Model the part on the Sheet Metal tab (or convert a STEP with Convert to Sheet Metal).
  2. Sheet rules: material, thickness, inner radius, K-factor (default 0.44), relief and minimum flange. Apply regenerates the part.
  3. Sheet-metal manufacturability check: fix holes near bends and short flanges.
  4. Flatten and check the blank size and bend lines.
  5. Flat DXF (laser): writes the cutting DXF (cut on AM_0 green, bends on AM_3 yellow, notes on AM_5).
  6. Sheets (nesting): bring the current part, parts of an assembly, local DXF/kcpart or files of a case; check quantities. Enter sheets (e.g. 1219 × 2438, 1524 × 3048; quantity 0 = unlimited), remnants, gap, margin and rotation. Calculate shows N sheets, yield and the layout.
  7. Save cutting package: a folder with one DXF (R12/Shift-JIS) and one A3 PDF per sheet, a JSON plan and a CSV/JSON purchase list.

Tips

  • Lock rolling direction (X) keeps the part's X parallel to the sheet's X (grain); free rotation uses 5° steps.
  • The calculation runs in the background with progress and Cancel.
  • Propose purchase list sends the sheets as a proposal to the case.

Common mistakes

  • DXF without material/thickness: fill them in before calculating (SS045/SUS040 give family and thickness, not the steel grade).
  • The check PDF is fitted to the page: it is not a 1:1 template. Use the DXF on the laser.
  • Before the first production of a new part, check one physical cut part.
